ANCILLARY ITEMS
Introduction
The author of this series of articles on "How To Spec Premium Diesel Fuels" has attempted to provide valuable information on each chemical element and all correctable performance attributes connected with the subject. Throughout the process many somewhat less important properties that can be improved in diesel fuels have been intentionally left to discussion in this final part of the series. This article is intended to cover the past deficiencies by discussing those other less predominant fuel properties and performance parameters that need to be more fully explored.
This article will cover (a) Fuel Lubricity, (b) Biodiesel Content, (c) De-Icing, (d) Rust & Corrosion Inhibition, (e) Static Electricity, (f) Foaming Tendencies, (g) Deposit Modification and (h) Microbiological Activity in diesel fuels.
Along with a full description of the individual fuel parameters, this article will discuss the importance of each item and offer the chemical additive treatments necessary to rectify and correct the fuel shortcomings. The attempt herein is to provide the reader the necessary understanding of each problem area and the knowledge to adequately undertake and seek a solution for each inadequacy.
While each of these ancillary items have been left to the final article in the series, they are no less important than those parameters and corrections discussed in the previous articles. And, while these ancillary items in and of themselves may cause enormous harm to the diesel equipment and significant loss of operating dollars, the items discussed in this article are all easily correctable.
Each ancillary item will be discussed as thoroughly as possible with emphasis on the most current remedial actions and more recent chemical treatments ascribed for each. The recommendations contained herein represent the best available remedies known by the author for dealing with each item.
This article is meant to be used as a reference guide in dealing with each ancillary item and the readers may discover other available corrective actions that will better serve them for their particular applications.
