A municipal bus fleet additive trial shows an outstanding increase of over 7% in fuel economy (MPG). But the most amazing results are the dramatic maintenance savings in filter replacements, fuel injector replacements, and EGR valve replacements.

A simple way to evaluate fuel economy is to follow a few easy steps.

 

1) Start with a full tank of fuel and write down in a notebook the current odometer reading.   Keep that notebook handy in the vehicle.

 

2) At your next fill up, completely fill the tank.  In the notebook, record 3 items*

        a) current odometer reading

        b) number of gallons of fuel needed to fill the tank

        c) total price spent on fuel 

   

              * for more investigative purposes, record the date and location/supplier of the fuel being purchased  

                 and any maintenance issues or services performed (like oil changes.)  This can help you identify

                 fueling frequency and later on which suppliers sell fuel that works more efficiently in your vehicle.

 

3) The Math

        a) subtract the previous odometer reading from the current one to get the amount of miles driven between fill ups. 

        b) divide the miles driven by the number of gallons need to fill the tank completely (this number is your MPG)

 

4) Repeat this for 30 days (or more) to establish a consumption pattern.  

 

5) Average the MPG figures over the 30 (or more) day times span to calculate your MPG average. 

 

 

Keep in mind that, especially with diesel fuel, seasonal shifts in fuel chemistry between summer and winter will affect fuel economy.   As much or more so than WHERE the fuel is purchased.  Also, how you vehicle is maintained (regular oil changes or not) can also have an adverse effect on fuel economy.
