IDID’s have the potential of causing catastrophic engine problems.
Internal diesel injector deposits (IDID) are a very real problem in today’s diesel fuel injector systems. These deposits are generally unnoticeable at first but if left untreated IDID buildup can decrease engine power, significantly reduce fuel economy, increase emissions and eventually will lead to expensive injector failure and equipment downtime.
IDID is really an evolution of an old problem. Historically deposits on diesel injector tips would form in and around nozzle holes, disrupting spray pattern, causing improper fuel delivery and poor fuel combustion. Diesel fuel detergents that have worked in the past do not correct the IDID problem.
Today’s Tier 3 and Tier 4 engines with High Pressure Common Rail (HPCR) diesel fuel injection systems have created new problems. HPCR diesel fuel systems have much smaller internal spray holes and more intricate parts with very tight tolerances. These modern injector systems are far less forgiving of IDID build-up. With internal tolerances much smaller than a human hair, any build-up at all can cause sticking problems and injector issues that have not been seen before.
